I’ve spent the last 11 years handling used Caterpillar generator packages, mostly commercial sets from 100 kW to 2 MW. I have made mistakes that had nothing to do with compression, leaks, or how loud the engine sounded. The worst mistakes happened when the machine sounded great.
The one that still bothers me was in September 2024. The unit was a low-hour Cat generator from a closed plant. Clean paint, clean oil, no visible coolant marks. We had two hours before the site closed, so I skipped the full paperwork routine. In hindsight, I should have asked for the serial number before we unlocked the door. The buyer’s engineer asked for it while they were writing the purchase order.
That’s where the deal fell apart. The OEM build record from a Caterpillar generator serial number lookup showed a package that had been upfitted with an aftermarket control panel. The machine ran, but the panel did not have the protective functions the customer’s application required. Nobody would have caught it by listening to the engine.
Buyers ask about hours, leaks, rust, and whether it starts. Those surface checks matter, but they don’t tell you what the generator actually is. In 2018, I bought a machine at auction based on that checklist. It looked crisp. Then I found out it was an export-rated package with no certified breaker and no support paperwork. I’m not saying every export unit is bad, but it wasn’t right for my customer’s site. That lesson cost us about $9,000 plus the time and embarrassment of telling a good client we had to respecify.
The deeper problem is not wear. It’s loss of identity. A commercial Caterpillar generator is not a portable generator. The same basic engine family can be configured with different cooling, fuel, voltage, control, and enclosure systems. Once those details are lost, every later owner is guessing.
I can speak to industrial standby and prime power applications. If you’re dealing with a small portable generator, the calculus might be different. But for larger used sets, configuration is the product, not the paint.
I used to check serial numbers after the walkaround, not before. That order was backwards.
A Caterpillar generator serial number lookup is not a magic database that always gives you a perfect biography. But it can give you the original arrangement, build spec, control panel type, and service information. That gives you a place to stand when someone says, “It’s a 600 kW generator.”
With a dealer account, the lookup is quick. If you don’t have dealer access, ask the owner for the serial number and call a Cat dealer or authorized service provider. If the owner can’t give you a serial number, that is a red flag.
And if you’re trying to sell used Caterpillar generator packages, the serial number is not optional. I do not mean every cleaned-up unit is hiding something. But serious buyers want records. Help them. A machine with documentation will almost always be easier to sell than the same machine with a fresh battery and a vague description.
Search for “control panel” and you’ll find everything from industrial HMIs to a Hunter sprinkler control panel. Those products are not interchangeable. A sprinkler controller schedules irrigation valves. A generator controller governs frequency, regulates voltage, controls the engine, and watches for faults.
If a previous owner swapped the original Cat controller for a universal unit, the replacement may look fine but be configured wrong. I once spent a week chasing a no-start issue on a used 350 kW unit. It turned out the previous owner had wired the emergency stop into a terminal that the universal controller was ignoring in that configuration. The engine started when you jumped the switch, but it would not have shut down on low oil pressure. That is the kind of thing that looks like a wiring inconvenience until it becomes a safety failure.
So no, I’m not being cute when I say a Hunter sprinkler control panel is not the answer. A genset controller has a completely different job. If you’re replacing one, use the correct OEM part or a proven equivalent with properly configured protection functions.
Most control-panel failures are electrical, and many electrical failures are actually test mistakes. I have stood behind a technician who replaced a perfectly good relay because he used the wrong meter setting. The relay was fine. He just didn’t have a clear test plan.
So for anybody new to used generator inspection, here is the basic version of how to set a multimeter to continuity. It probably sounds skippable, but it has saved us from replacing hundreds of parts that were never bad.
Put the red lead in the jack labeled VΩmA, and the black lead in the COM jack. Turn the dial to the resistance or continuity position. On many digital meters, that position is marked with a diode symbol and a sound-wave icon. If the meter has a Mode button, press it until you see the sound-wave icon on the display. Touch the probes together first. If the meter beeps, you’re ready. Then, with power off, touch one probe to each end of the wire, fuse, or switch contact. No beep means the path is open. Beep usually means the path has continuity. Do not use continuity on a live circuit.
That little skill changes how you inspect a used generator. Instead of guessing whether a fuse is blown, you can verify it in seconds. Instead of replacing sensors that might be fine, you can trace the actual fault. It is not a substitute for an OEM schematic, but it is a useful filter.
A generator housing enclosure looks like a simple metal box, but it controls airflow, weather protection, and noise. On used units, I have seen enclosures bolted on later to make an open skid look weatherproof. That can create an engine that overheats under load because the enclosure was never designed for that cooling package.
I remember a used Cat generator with a pristine generator housing enclosure. The photos looked excellent. When I opened the access door on site, the front of the radiator was covered by an aftermarket cold-weather cover still installed in June. The seller had never run the set under load. That generator would have overheated on a warm day.
Enclosures can also hide leaks, rodent damage, and debris. The outside of the box doesn’t tell you what happened inside. If the enclosure is not part of the original factory build, ask for proof that it doesn’t interfere with cooling. In my experience, that is where a lot of “too good to be true” deals start to make more sense.
After all the mistakes, my pre-purchase routine looks boring. Start with a serial number lookup. Ask for the OEM build sheet. Compare the nameplate to the records. Open the control panel and verify the fault settings. Set the multimeter to continuity before chasing circuits. Load test the unit when the site allows it. That process has cost less than a single stupid mistake.
This works for us because we’re a mid-size dealer with access to dealer support and technicians who understand the systems. If you’re a one-off buyer without those resources, lean on a local Cat dealer or an experienced electrical contractor. Your situation may be different, but the serious questions are the same.
I know it’s tempting to fall in love with a clean generator. I’ve done it. But ask for the serial number first. You may be avoiding a deal that starts beautifully and ends with an invoice you’ll have to explain to someone who doesn’t like surprises.
