The generator end failed under load after about 40 minutes, and the rewind cost $2,400. I still kick myself. A Chamberlain panel is designed to operate a garage door motor. A generator control panel—something like a Caterpillar EMCP, a Deep Sea controller, or an automatic transfer switch—does different work: it monitors engine alarms, controls starting, and manages the transfer of loads. They're both “control panels” in name only. Use the Chamberlain panel for the door. Use the right generator controller for the genset. If someone tells you a garage door control can handle a 100 kW transfer, that's not a product discussion—that's a safety issue.

What can a 3500 watt generator actually run?

Let me split this into the two ways I get asked. If you're asking about emergency basics: a 3500 watt generator can run a refrigerator, a few lights, a phone/router, maybe a small sump pump. It won't run central air conditioning, an electric water heater, or much of anything that draws 5,000+ surge watts. At 120 volts, 3,500 watts is about 29 amps, divided across the receptacles. Running watts are lower than starting watts, so you always leave headroom.

How do I test a water heater element without a multimeter?

First, understand the load: a typical 4,500-watt element on a 240-volt circuit draws about 18.75 amps. A 3,500-watt generator can't handle that load anyway, so the element may not be the problem.
